ReRun Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Thoroughbred adoption program whose mission is to help ex-racehorses find a second career. Horses accepted into the program are evaluated, rested and rehabilitated as needed. The Thoroughbreds are then placed with qualified adopters to begin their chance at a second career

JANE GILBERT TO SERVE AS NEW RERUN PRESIDENT

ReRun, the non-profit thoroughbred adoption program, announced today that Jane Gilbert has been elected as its new President.  A lifelong horsewoman, Ms. Gilbert lives in Titusville, New Jersey on a 36 acre farm where she and her husband breed and race thoroughbreds at New Jersey Racetracks and Philadelphia Park.

Ms. Gilbert has been licensed for 30 years as a USEF “R” Judge in Hunters, Hunt Seat Equitation, Jumpers and a Dressage TD.  Ms. Gilbert has served as past president of NJ Bred Hunters, Eastern States Dressage and CT Association, New Jersey Equine Advisory Board (Department of Agriculture) and the New Jersey Horse Council.  Ms. Gilbert currently serves on the Board of the Horse Park of New Jersey and the New Jersey Thoroughbred Breeders Association.  In 2008, Ms. Gilbert retired as an insurance agent for Blue Bridle Equine Insurance after 25 years.  Ms. Gilbert has served as member of ReRun’s Board of Directors.

“These are especially challenging times in this economic climate and the prospects for retired racehorses are seriously affected.  We are committed to educate owners and trainers as to aftercare options and to place these equine athletes in second careers” said Gilbert.

ReRun, founded in 1996, maintains chapters in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Kentucky.  ReRun’s prior President and Adoption Coordinator, Laurie-Condurso Lane, will continue to serve the organization as Executive Director and Adoption Coordinator.

ReRun is a 501(c)3 organization.
RERUN SEEKS NEW FARM IN NEW JERSEY

ReRun and Rein Dancer Therapeutic Riding Center (in New Egypt NJ) have enjoyed a beneficial relationship over the past year.  As both programs have grown, we have mutually determined that the facility we have been sharing is no longer able to accommodate both programs.  Although ReRun will be moving to a new farm both organizations have great respect for each other and wish each well in future endeavors!

Horses awaiting adoption have been relocated to 3 ReRun foster farms in New Jersey while we search for a new facility.  ReRun is actively seeking a donated or leased farm in Central NJ that will accommodate 20-25 Thoroughbreds.  PLEASE HELP US FIND OUR NEW FARM!!!

SAVE THE DATE:  MAY 6-9, 2010  JERSEY FRESH CCI***/CCI**
at Horse Park of NJ in Allentown, NJ

ReRun has been selected as a beneficiary of the annual Jersey Fresh Three-Day Event which comprises one of only two three-star competitions, and one of only five two-star competitions held each year in the United States.

Thoroughbreds are well-suited for eventing which serves as a successful second career for many ex-racehorses.  The Jersey Fresh competition played a key role in selecting the gold medal-winning equestrian athletes who represented our country at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil.  This year it will also serve as a selection Trial for the World Equestrian Games.
The sport of Eventing encompasses Three-Day Events – a three-phase competition comprising Dressage on the first day; Endurance, featuring Cross-Country, on the second day; and Show Jumping on the third day – as well as Horse Trials in which all phases are typically run on a single day. Eventing is therefore aptly described as an “equestrian triathlon” covering every aspect of horsemanship.  More details about the event, including a dinner on May 8 at the Horse Park will follow.  For information about the event or to volunteer contact Jane Gilbert at 609 737 9645 or at thegilberts@att.net

MISTAKEN IDENTITY SAVES THEBUCKSTOPSHERE

On Feb 12 2010, Laurie Lane, ReRun Program Director, received a frantic call from Bev Dee, founder of Bright Futures Rescue in Ohio. About 140 horses (many Thoroughbreds) were crammed into kill pens at the infamous “Sugar Creek” auction in line to be loaded onto a trailer headed for slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. Tattoo numbers had been pulled for many of the horses in an attempt to find their connections and spare them from the horrors of what was to come. One Thoroughbred “Thebuckstopshere,” a horse who was adopted out by ReRun in 2004 was reportedly in this line headed for slaughter. Unable to locate or contact the adopter, Lane sprung into action and pleaded with the meat dealer to pull the horse and make a private sale. Paying $375, the injured horse was pulled and Lane made several more calls to get immediate transport and overnight stabling for Buck. His face revealed the trauma of his journey through a Kentucky auction, double-decker trailering to Ohio, and crowded pens of terrified horses. After being tended to and cleaned up, he made his seven hour journey to ReRun’s farm in New York where he is now safe.
This horse’s story took an interesting twist when we discovered he was NOT, in fact, the horse ReRun adopted years ago whose name was “Thebuckstoopshere”, but a horse by Montbrook born in 2006 (two years after the ReRun horse had been adopted) and named “Thebuckstopshere”. Because his name, less one letter, mirrored the name of the ReRun horse he was spared from a horrible fate. ReRun will take back any horse that we learn is no longer with its original owner or is at risk. Time was of the essence to save this horse and Thebuckstopshere was the fortunate victim of “Mistaken Identity.” A host of other TBs in the Sugar Creek kill pen last week were not so lucky. As a testament to what this 2006 foal went through, our NY Farm Director, Sue Swart, gave him the barn name “Trooper”.
