ReRun’s Trisha Greene–Stewart Presents The Peter J. Greene Memorial Award to Sara Webb and Homer for the Highest Scoring OTTB at the OVCTA Big Fall Show.

Homer’s dismal racing career brought him to the barn where I rode in college, and a few months after graduation, I bought my first horse – a young, off-the-track-Thoroughbred, who was only slightly greener than I. I moved him closer to my home, and we began to learn – Homer to trail ride, paper chase, and listen to my aids, and me to teach a horse of my own, and to trust him (cantering through an open field – eek!). This past summer, I decided to kick our education up a notch, and became a working student at a local dressage barn.

Dressage trainer Jan Beale is no stranger to Thoroughbreds, and with her encouraging style of teaching, Homer and I made what I believe is remarkable progress during my months off as a school librarian. I still cannot believe that the horse I am riding now is the same horse that I started with at the beginning of the summer. Homer has really taken to dressage, our connection as a team is excellent, and our bond seems to
grow each time that I ride him. I was encouraged by how well he has gone in the few dressage tests in which we've competed, and was incredibly excited when we won the Peter J. Greene Memorial Award for the Highest Scoring Off-The-Track-Thoroughbred at the OVCTA Big Fall Show this past November. Great encouragement to work harder for next year!

ReRun Names Laurie Lane New Executive Director!
Oct. 10, 2010

ReRun, the Thoroughbred adoption program and on-site placement service for Monmouth Park's retired racehorses, has named Laurie Condurso Lane as its new Executive Director. Lane founded the New Jersey Chapter in 1996 and has served as ReRun's Adoption Coordinator since 2000. The organization's previous Executive Director exited in 2007 and the position has gone unfilled until now.

According to Jane Gilbert, ReRun's President, Lane's expanded responsibilities still include adoption coord-ination. "No one is better at the intake and adoption process than Laurie, but all of her talents aren't being utilized to the fullest extent, and who better to serve as the face of ReRun than someone who's been with it from the get-go and helped shape its policies, procedures, and core values?" says Gilbert.

Lane is not new to the racing community. She grew up around the track alongside her father, Anthony Condurso, a retired jockey and current owner. She brings over 40 years of experience in the industry to ReRun. Combined with her many years as an equestrian, Lane possesses a comprehensive understanding of the two communities ReRun serves--the racing and riding communities. "I'm honored to be ReRun's Executive Director and I look forward to helping the organization grow so it can help more horses without compromising its strong tradition of integrity and stewardship," says Lane.

Happy Birthday!

This January we said Happy Birthday to all our ReRun residents. However, an extra special Birthday wish goes to an incredible athlete that we are blessed to have as a part of our lives.  The horse’s name is Known Ranger.  Born in England (raced there before coming to the US) by Known Fact out of  Home On The Range, Ranger must have made his parents proud; master of the turf, winning 14 races, matching Belmont Park’s one-mile turf course record, and earning over $330,000.  Ranger entered the ReRun program at age 9.

Ranger was placed in a private home with a wonderful adopter who loved and cared for him for about 7 years. The adopter, experiencing some life changing circumstances, could no long keep Ranger and he came back once again to ReRun. As you all know, ReRun is not a retirement facility. However, Ranger is one of the horses that are pensioned with us. He resides at one of our quiet little satellite farms in KY, under the watchful eye and excellent care of his foster mom, Helena. Ranger still carries himself with class despite his advancing age and the ill effects of EPM, which he contracted two years ago. Happy Birthday, Ranger. We Love You! Ranger would love the gift of sponsorship this year. It will let him know he is remembered and loved by all.

The pictures were sent to me by one of his fans/sponsors. They show Ranger at Saratoga on opening day 7/22/94 - Ranger is on the rail in the green cap, white & green silks, green shadow roll. This was his first time ever on dirt & mud. He was on a 7 race win streak, all on turf. He finished 2nd.
